Centre Square - Middlesbrough’s new prestigious office development – has been nominated for yet another building award.
 
It has been shortlisted in the Best Commercial Property category in the Northern LABC Building Excellence Awards. LABC (Local Authority Building Control) represents all local authority building control teams in England and Wales.
 
This is Centre Square’s fourth award nomination and the developer behind the project – Ashall Projects – will find out next month if its team has won.
 
Centre Square has already been shortlisted as Building Project of the Year in Constructing Excellence North East Awards and it is in the running for the British Council of Offices’ Best Commercial Workplace Award.  The winners of both of these awards will be announced in the Autumn. Earlier this year Centre Square was a finalist in the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ (RICS) Social Impact Awards.
 
Mark Ashall, of Ashall Projects, said the building industry’s recognition of the Centre Square project was highly appreciated by all involved.
 

“Our aim was to create buildings which have a stunning visual impact, but also provide a high-quality working environment that is adaptable, energy and space efficient and sustainable,” said Mr Ashall. “Employees are a business’ greatest asset – and that was our starting point.”
 
As well as the LABC nomination, Mr Ashall said he hoped to be able to announce very soon details of Centre Square’s first occupiers.
 
The Centre Square project was launched five years ago by Ashall Projects in partnership with Middlesbrough Council.  Their goal was to develop top quality office space to attract companies offering well-paid jobs which, in turn, would boost the local economy.   The location of Centre Square was also a major factor.
 
“There are so many benefits of a town centre location – access to the public realm, local amenities and public transport – and the presence now of Centre Square, with its light, comfortable, sustainable and flexible working environment, makes moving to the town centre so attractive for employers,” said Mr Ashall.
 
Two Centre Square, a three-storey 34,000 sq ft office building, was the first to be completed.  One Centre Square followed two months later.  It is bigger – 60,000 sq ft over four storeys – with a large space for a restaurant or café on the ground floor.
